If you prefer to pay via a method other than PayPal, see my store on Monkeys Undies - see useful links page
Please also note that I can only have 5 products at a time on this site at the moment. Check my Monkeys Undies store if you don't see what you are looking for or contact me. I will combine postage on items purchased on both sites (eg: buy a nappy cover on this site and a pre-loved item on MU and share the postage). Just remember to ensure that you send me an e-mail to let me know!!!!!
The cloth menstrual pads I am currently making are made from 4 layers - Synthetic suedecloth for the lining, thirsty bamboo towelling core, Waterproof PUL all the way down the wings, and cotton cordoroy underneath to grip to undies.
Because of the bamboo core, this item will need to be washed in WARM water several times preferrably with no detergent and dried thoroughly between washes. It is ok to put them in the dryer on warm (not hot) at this stage, but better to hang them by the wings on the line or clothes airer. You need hot water to remove the waxy build up from the bamboo.
When you have started using them, there are a few different ways to deal with them. I just chuck them in with my dark colours as is, but some ladies prefer to put them in a little bucket of water and empty the water on the pot plants before putting them in the wash.
Please do NOT use vinegar in the wash water as it will eat the PUL and reduce the life of the pads. Same goes for pretty much any laundry product. Fabric softener will make the bamboo fibres swell and not absorb anything, any sort of bleach (including oxygen bleach) will damage your pads and is not required. If you are worried about germs, hang them on the line in the sun. The sun has fantastic antiseptic properties.
No special storage is required - just fold them up and wrap the wings around to create a tidy little parcel and store in your undies drawer for next use.
Put the cordoroy side against your panties, wrap the wings around and snap in place. My pads have two snap settings. For maximum comfort, wear snug panties to help keep the pad in place - just make sure they are not too tight around the legs. Please do change the pads frequently for hygiene and comfort - 3 or 4 times per day for heavy flow and twice for light flow. Even if you use disposables, you should change this frequently.
Photos will be added soon...
Trifolds - a flat nappy with a strip of absorbant fabric sewn down the centre. I currently use a hemp/organic cotton muslin for the nappy and 95% bamboo towelling for the strip.
Fitted cloth nappies - These nappies are generally one size fits most (OSFM). They are generally made from either bamboo or hemp, have elastic around the legs and at the back and do up with snaps, velcro or snappi/pins. I have sourced a fantastic bamboo towelling which is 95% (most are only 70%). The other 5% is polyester for strength and durability. Bamboo is soft and fluffy and exceptionally absorbant. I use swimwear elastic for durability. My nappies can be made with or without a soft suedecloth built in liner.
All-in-one nappies - An easy nappy to use
Pocket nappies - An AI2 (All-in-two)
Both bamboo and hemp need to be washed in hot water several times to obtain maximum absorbancy. Wash in hot water with a cup of white vinegar (the cheap kitchen vinegar is great) and line dry thoroughly. Repeat the process several times (up to 10 if you can). Don't worry about the vinegar smell - it will evaporate while drying on the line. DO NOT use any sort of bleach (including oxygen-based bleaches) or fabric softener. Bleach will weaken the fabric and fabric softener will fill the fibres and reduce absorbancy. Tumble dryers should only be used in an emergency and only on warm. Tumble drying will remove lint from the fabric and prolonged use will wear away the fabric thus making it less absorbant. Air drying inside is fine, but drying on the line in full sun will sanitise and remove stains from nappies.
Microfibre need only be washed once or twice (in hot water if possible) to remove any chemicals from manufacturing. It is preferrable to not tumble dry these fabrics as they build static. NEVER ever put microfibre directly against the skin - always put a barrier between a baby's bottom and the fabric (ie: in the case of pocket nappies with microfibre inserts, always place the insert in the nappy and not just on top of the liner).
PUL (Polyurethane laminate) is a thin, breathable membrane on the back of a synthetic fabric. Products containing PUL (some nappies, bibs and cloth menstrual pads) should be washed initially in hot water with low or no soap to remove residual chemicals. PUL should never come into contact with any sort of acid or alkaline including vinegar and oxygen bleach. Any sort of corrosive will damage the PUL and reduce its life-span.
